MENGELE'S LIFE IN THE MILITARY
As Mengele grew, he had become part of the military himself. He wasn’t just a normal man in the military; he was considered a hero to the citizens of Germany. Mengele had joined the Nazi party in 1937 but a year later he joined the SS and that’s where he got his medical degree from. Mengele had participated in several events in the army; in 1940 he had volunteered to join the medical service in the Waffen-SS which was a combat unit of the SS, He’d then become known as a soldier. Speaking of soldier, Mengele had been awarded an Iron cross second class, let alone an Iron cross first class. In January 1942 Mengele managed to pull two German soldiers from a critical burning tank and that allowed German citizens to look up to the great man he was at the time. Not only did Mengele obtain awards for serving as such a heroic soldier, he served as an incredible medic during the war and obtained the Wound badge and he also was served with a medal, a medal for the care of the German people as he had critically saved many German lives. Mengele’s excellence and heroics towards the army had lead him to obtain the rank of Captain, which was called the SS-Hauptstrumfuhrer at the time. He’d then been transferred to Auschwitz, which was Germany’s largest concentration camp. A photo of Josef Mengele wearing his military coat is shown to the left of this page, as you can see he was constantly wearing his iron cross, he seaked respect.
